History

The Emergency Service Medal was awarded to defence services personnel in recognition of service between September 3, 1939, and March 31, 1946. It was awarded to members of the Defence Forces, the Chaplaincy Service, the Army Nursing Service, and the Local Defence Forces for 1 year of service, and to members of the Air Raid Precautions Service, the Irish Red Cross, and the Local Security Forces for 2 years of service. A "1939 1946" clasp was awarded in recognition of each additional 2 years of service. A maximum of 2 clasps could be awarded.

There are 11 different versions of the Bronze Medal that differ in reverse inscription according to the organisation of the recipient. All versions feature an obverse inscription that translates to "Emergency Period," with a suspension bar is inscribed "SEURBHIS NAISIUNTA" (National Service).
