The Malta George Cross 50th Anniversary Medal was awarded to uniformed members of Allied armed forces and merchant navies for service during and after the Siege of Malta from June 10, 1940, to September 8, 1943. It was also awarded to Maltese citizens who served during the same period including members of the Malta Police Force, the Dockyard Defence Battery, the Voluntary Aid Detachments, the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance, the Malta Defence, the Malta Auxiliary Corps, the Malta Volunteer Defence Force/Home Guard, the Malta Fire Brigade, as well as Direct Commissioners, Regional Protection Officers, and Protection Officers. This medal was established to commemorate the George Cross Medal awarded to the Island of Malta in 1942.
Medals were not awarded after April 15, 1994.
