San Marino, Republic. An Order of San Marino, Grand Cross Badge, c.1935
(Ordine Equestre per il merito civile e militare San Marino protettore della repubblica). Instituted in 1859. In silver gilt with blue and white enamels, hand painted portrait of San Marino surrounded by the Italian inscription ""SAN MARINO PROTETTORE"" (San Marino Protector) on the obverse, San Marino coat-of arms surrounded by the Italian inscription "" MERITO CIVILE E MILITARE"" (Civil and Military Merit) on the reverse, measuring 56 mm (w) x 89 mm (h -inclusive of its crown suspension), with elongated suspension loop, with its original full-length sash, very fine.
This Order is conferred upon military personnel and civilians for outstanding civil or military service to the Republic, as well as meritorious service within scientific, political, humanitarian, and artistic endeavours. The order is presented in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
The inscription on the reverse of Type I reads "merito militare" or "merito civile" whereas Type II inscriptions on the reverse read "merito civile e militare".
The Grand Cross is only conferred upon Foreign Chiefs of State.
There are many variations of this Order; some feature a crown.
