Physical Description and Item Details

A Wehrmacht Heer (Army) Gebirgsjäger Officer’s Edelweiss Cap Insignia. In silvered zinc and gilded aluminum; two piece construction; with both prongs intact on the reverse; measuring 31 mm x 27.57 mm; better than fine condition.

History

The Edelweiss Insignia was worn by mountain troops. It was introduced on May 2, 1939. On the visor cap it was worn between the cockade insignia and the eagle insignia, whereas on the mountain cap it was affixed to the left side.

There are two main varieties. The one worn with the visor cap usually had no stem, whereas the one worn with the mountain cap did. The insignia was made of two pieces, a gold-coloured stamen and silver-coloured petals.

The insignia was made of metal.
