History

The Military Merit Medal was likely instituted in 1827 by Duke Carl II of Brunswick. However, some sources claim that the medal was established earlier in the 1820s. The Military Merit Medal was conferred upon individuals who demonstrated military merit in 1815, the last year of the Napoleonic Wars. The Military Merit Medal was conferred in Gold, Silver, and Bronze. The Bronze Medal may have been an unofficial grade of the Military Merit Medal, 1815.
