The Medal was founded by Prince Albert of Prussia, who was acting as Regent of Brunswick, and it was conferred upon the men of Brunswick who participated in the Schleswig-Holstein campaign from 1848 to 1849.
Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, doctors, civil servants and enlisted men were eligible to receive the award.
