History

The Medal was instituted by King Georg V and was conferred upon veterans of the Hanoverian Army who participated in the Battle of Langensalza.

The battle was fought between the Kingdoms of Hanover and Prussia and although the Hanoverian forces won the battle, they were surrounded by the larger Prussian force and ultimately forced to surrender. Following the battle, the Kingdom of Hanover was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia and eventually became part of the unified German nation state.

This Medal is the last Award that was instituted in the Kingdom of Hanover.
