This medal was established during the reign of Catherine the Great to commemorate the storming of the Turkish fortress Izmail.
The silver medal was awarded to non-commissioned officers and enlisted men.
The reverse inscription translates to: "For Extraordinary Bravery Shown in the Taking of Izmail 11 December 1790".
