History

This medal was created during the reign of Alexander I in commemoration of the planned Antarctic Expedition, for the vessels the East and the Peaceful.

Medals were given as gifts to prominent individuals of the areas visited by the two ships. The medals may also have been awarded to crew members.

The medal could be worn on a ribbon, or accepted as a presentation medal, without an eyelet.

The obverse inscription translates to: "Alexander the First by the Grace of God Emperor of All Russias". The reverse inscription translates to: "Sloops East and Peaceful, 1819".
