The Development of the Petrochemical Complex of Western Siberia Medal was instituted in July 28, 1978 by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. This medal was conferred for participation in the development of the gas and oil complexes in Siberia. Approximately 25,000 people received this award.

The medal is composed of brass and measures 32mm. The ring at 12 o'clock is made as a part of the medal. The obverse has a depiction of a gas complex with oi wells, spheroids a, a tractor and a piece of oil pipeline.

The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Development of the Petrochemical Complex of Western Siberia". The reverse features Cyrillic script for the USSR.
