The suspension is 25mm in width by 15mm in height, and the screwback is 18mm in diameter. As Soviet awards are numbered and come with a booklet stating these award numbers, it is possible to determine the recipient of the award. Therefore, the value of each specific higher grade award depends on service records, actions for which the award is received, and branch of the Armed Forces. An award given to a successful pilot or submariner would be generally much more valuable then an award given to an ordinary infantryman.

History

This is the highest labour distinction in the USSR, awarded to Soviet citizens for notable and distinguished achievements in national economy and culture. The Gold Sickle and Hammer Medal was instituted to provide a visible means of recognition to those who were awarded the title.

The award could be conferred more than once.

The type I medal was awarded from May 22, 1940 to June 19, 1943.

It is estimated that around 30 Type I versions of the Gold Sickle and Hammer medal were awarded.
