The Civil Merit Medal was instituted on November 6, 1806, by King Friedrich I of Württemberg. The Medal was awarded to recognise exceptional civil merit and service.
The Type I Gold Medal features the King’s monogram “FR” under a crown. The medal may feature a large or small crown. The medals with the large crown were minted in the first issue of the medal, while the medals with the smaller crown were minted in the second issue of the medal.
