The Medal for Distinction in Guarding the State Border of the USSR was established on July 13, 1950. This medal was conferred upon border guard troops, servicemen, civilians and others in recognition of guarding the state borders of the USSR. Over 56,000 were awarded.
This medal has one type with three variations. All three have the same obverse and reverse.
Variation I was made of silver and was only made in the 1950s. Variation II is made of silver-plated silver alloy. Variation III is made of nickel silver (copper, zinc, and nickel alloy).
The reverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Distinction in Guarding the State Border of the USSR".
