The Medal for Distinguished Labour was established on December 27, 1938. This medal was conferred in recognition of shock labour that accomplishes a number of results. It was awarded to workers, national economy specialists, scientific workers, cultural workers, educators, health care workers, and other USSR citizens.
The Medal for Distinguished Labour is made of silver with red enamel, and has a small ring at 12 o'clock. It has two types. Type I, early suspension (1938-1943), has a triangular suspension with a red ribbon through the top and around the sides, which is held on by a screwback plate. The early screwback plates are smaller (18mm) and have a raised Mondvor mark, while later screwback plate are larger (24-25mm) and have a Monetny Dvor mark. The reverse of the medal has a small Latin "No" and a hand engraved serial number. There are two variations.
Variation I has a copper screwpost that measures 3mm in diameter. The serial numbers range from roughly 1 to 14,000. The lowest observed is 3,608 and the highest is 13,652.
Variation II has a silver screwpost, 4mm in diameter and the serial numbers range from 18,000 to 31,000.
The obverse Russian inscription translates to: "For Distinguished Labour". The reverse Russian inscription translates to: "Labour in the USSR-A Matter of Honour".
