Democratic Republic of Vietnam / North Vietnam (1945-1976)

The Democratic Republic of Vietnam was a country that existed in Southeast Asia from 1954 to 1975. The capital city was Hanoi.

When North Vietnam defeated the French colonial administration of Vietnam, the country became controlled by a single communist regime modelled after those of the Soviet Union and China. That was the beginning for the conflict between North and South.

The Vietnam War was formerly America’s longest war until it was surpassed by the war in Afghanistan. An estimated 2 million civilians and 1.3 million soldiers died during the war. The Vietnam War ended in victory for the North after American troops were withdrawn in 1973, and South Vietnam was completely taken over by communist forces in 1975. The two countries just recently resumed formal diplomatic relations in 1995.

The highest award is the title Brass Fortress Order. This Order was conferred in recognition of outstanding service in the liberation of South Vietnam.
